A Solitary Wish

This emotional and reflective work paints a stunning picture of the holiday season as seen through the eyes of a homeless person on a street corner. While people walk by the shopping bags, this homeless person only has one holiday wish – to be noticed.

Medieval Sketches

Medieval Sketches MP3

A Dorian chant melody provides the basis for this work in three parts: Plainsong, Aria, and Gigue.
Modal harmonies surround the chant, and you’ll find that this piece was carefully composed to sound more difficult than it actually is.
The 6/8 Gigue provides an energetic, exciting finale.

Heart of Fire (String Orchestra)

Inspired by those incredible figures in history whose passion and perseverance are legendary, this bold work is a tribute to those fiery hearts that have left a legacy of a better life for us today.

The opening sixteenth note pulse in the strings immediately grasps the audience’s attention as the music propels forward.

A haunting lyrical melody becomes the focus of the second section, which features solos in both violin parts, viola and cello.

A brief transition brings back the aggressive themes from the opening as the work comes to a powerful conclusion!

Mini-Interview with the Composer

What inspired this piece?

The piece was originally a commission by a festival group in Massachusetts, they wanted something epic and adventurous sounding.

Many of the students were graduating so it was a send-off into their next chapter of college and the future.

I write visually and work in the film industry which is probably why I get a lot of comments that my music sounds like film scores.

I took the most common elements from any heroic legendary story to write this piece.

Where did you compose Warrior Legacy (studio, nature, shower)?

I normally compose in my home office at my computer but use things like nature, pictures, stories, other music as tools to help get the creative juices flowing.

What’s your usual composition process? (Methods, equipment, and overall rhythm)

My composition process usually includes sketching a melody or chords first, orchestrating, and then coming up with the title. Sometimes the title comes first or an idea or theme will inspire a work so it can definitely vary.

Do you have a favorite piece for string orchestra?

I don’t have a favorite piece for string orchestra at the moment. Usually, a composer says their favorite is the latest thing they’ve written.

What are you working on right now?

I’ve taken a bit of a break from composing to focus on some other career things but I’ll probably go back to composing in a few years as time allows.

Where can string orchestra teachers find more of your work?

You can find all of my published works on the FJH music website or dealer sites like Pepper or Lucks.
