Mini-Interview with the Composer

What inspired this piece?

The piece was originally a commission by a festival group in Massachusetts, they wanted something epic and adventurous sounding.

Many of the students were graduating so it was a send-off into their next chapter of college and the future.

I write visually and work in the film industry which is probably why I get a lot of comments that my music sounds like film scores.

I took the most common elements from any heroic legendary story to write this piece.

Where did you compose Warrior Legacy (studio, nature, shower)?

I normally compose in my home office at my computer but use things like nature, pictures, stories, other music as tools to help get the creative juices flowing.

What’s your usual composition process? (Methods, equipment, and overall rhythm)

My composition process usually includes sketching a melody or chords first, orchestrating, and then coming up with the title. Sometimes the title comes first or an idea or theme will inspire a work so it can definitely vary.

Do you have a favorite piece for string orchestra?

I don’t have a favorite piece for string orchestra at the moment. Usually, a composer says their favorite is the latest thing they’ve written.

What are you working on right now?

I’ve taken a bit of a break from composing to focus on some other career things but I’ll probably go back to composing in a few years as time allows.

Where can string orchestra teachers find more of your work?

You can find all of my published works on the FJH music website or dealer sites like Pepper or Lucks.
